TDT was a great first impression, everyone's amazing and super helpful. Personally i had Scott as my trainer and assessor when completing my Heavy Rigid truck licence.  He was absolutely amazing, super friendly and talkative which helped with nerves as well as being super clear and simple with all of his instructions. Which ultimately made it super easy to drive without stressing about anything. Scott is really polite but really straight to the point, which I think is great. Thank you Scott and thank you tdt😃

Had a great experience with TDT Driving School Australia. Ash is an excellent trainer—very supportive, patient, and professional throughout the whole process. A huge thank you to David for helping me successfully get my HR licence! I was extremely nervous before my driving test, but David was incredibly patient, supportive and positive throughout the whole training session. He explained everything clearly and gave me plenty of opportunities to practise until I felt comfortable and confident. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):

• RPL facilitates the progression of candidates through Qualifications by giving advanced standing for learning outcomes they already have achieved or competency they can demonstrate as already being held.
• RPL is appropriate for candidates who have previously attained skills and knowledge and who, when enrolling in Qualifications, seek to shorten the normal duration of their training and either continue or commence working.
• RPL is offered to all candidates during the Pre-Enrolment process.

Overview

Course Overview

The TLID0017 Operate container side lifter unit provides the skills and knowledge required to safely operate a container side lifter (also known as a side loader) to lift and transport shipping containers. It covers pre-operational checks, lifting techniques, load restraint, hazard control, and shutdown procedures, ensuring operations are compliant with workplace and regulatory safety standards.

2 days of face-to-face practical training and assessment Note: May vary depending on the learner’s prior skills and experience.

Target Audience

• Truck drivers and yard operators who handle containerised freight
• Logistics and transport personnel working in intermodal freight terminals, container depots, and freight forwarding operations
• Employers seeking to upskill staff for compliant container handling

Eligibility requirements

Participants must:

• Be at least 18 years of age
• Hold a current Heavy Rigid (HR) licence or higher (recommended)
• Have basic English literacy and numeracy skills (sufficient to interpret safety instructions and complete workplace documentation). LLND test will be conducted prior to commencement of training.
• Be physically fit to perform manual handling tasks
• Wear appropriate PPE during practical training and assessment

Unsupervised Self-Study/Homework:

• Prior to training, participants are expected to self-study up to 5 hours of pre-course reading via TDT’s LMS. Online learner guide resource pack will be provided.

Assessment methods:

• Theory assessment (multiple-choice or short-answer questions)
• Practical demonstration of safe side lifter operation, including:
  • Pre-start inspection
  • Safe container lifting and unloading
  • Load securement
  • Emergency procedures

Statement of Attainment:

Upon successful completion, participants will receive a Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment for: TLID0017 – Operate container side lifter

Pathways Into This Unit:

• Entry-level workers in the transport and logistics industry seeking to specialise in container handling
• Individuals with prior experience operating heavy vehicles (e.g. truck drivers with HR or HC licences)
• Those who have completed other relevant units from the TLI Transport and Logistics Training Package, such as:
  • TLID0020 – Shift materials safely using manual handling methods
  • TLILIC0003 – Licence to operate a forklift truck
  • TLID0015 – Load and unload goods/cargo

Pathways From This Unit:

• This unit may be used as a credit transfer toward full qualifications such as:
  • TLI31221 Certificate III in Driving Operations
  • TLI30321 Certificate III in Supply Chain Operations
• Enhances employability in roles such as:
  • Container transport operator
  • Side lifter operator
  • Freight handler in intermodal yards
• Provides a stepping stone to more advanced units and licences, such as:
  • TLILIC0024 – Licence to operate a vehicle loading crane (capacity 10 metre tonnes and above)
  • TLILIC0005 – Licence to operate a boom-type elevating work platform

This unit forms part of several other qualifications within the TLI Transport and Logistics Training Package and can be credited toward further study.
