recently completed my HR licence training with TDT Training and had a great experience from start to finish. A cheap heavy vehicle licence can come back to bite you. If the assessor who signed off your ticket is later found to be dodgy, your licence can get pulled, reviewed, or questioned, even if you did nothing wrong.

What just happened in NSW

Transport for NSW and the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator ran a crackdown across Tweed Heads, Chinderah, and Lismore. They checked 14 final assessments, covering 13 assessors and two training organisations.

The results were rough. Only 4 of the 13 assessors checked out clean, three assessors got kicked off the licensing scheme for good, and three more got referred to police.

This was not a one-off. Over the past year, Transport for NSW has been steadily pulling accreditation from other assessors under the Heavy Vehicle Competency Based Assessment scheme, over serious and repeat breaches.

One assessor with inside knowledge of the system said this could mess with the validity of licences those assessors had already signed off.

It has happened before, more than once

This is not just a new problem. Back in 2013, the NSW corruption watchdog (ICAC) found that a Roads and Maritime Services heavy vehicle assessor was taking cash, around $1,500 a time, to sign off logbooks for people who never sat a real driving test.

He certified at least 95 people as competent to drive a heavy vehicle without ever putting them behind the wheel for a proper assessment. Once ICAC handed down its findings, RMS cancelled the licences of the drivers involved.

Queensland has been through it too. In 2018, more than 250 truck drivers had their multi-combination licences revoked after Transport and Main Roads found the training organisation that issued them, Aegis Training Services, had not assessed drivers to the required standard.

Some of those drivers had already landed jobs on the strength of that licence. Overnight, they were back to a smaller truck and a smaller pay packet, through no fault of their own.

That is the sharp end of what happens when a provider or an assessor cuts corners. It is not just them who pays for it, the driver loses their ticket too, sometimes years after they thought the job was done.

Why this matters even if you are not in NSW

Every state runs its own scheme, but the problem is the same everywhere. When an assessment gets treated as a box to tick instead of a real test of skill, the licence at the end of it is only as good as the person who signed it.

A heavy vehicle licence is not just a card in your wallet. It is proof that someone actually checked you can handle a loaded rig safely.

If that check was rushed, faked, or skipped, the problem does not stay with the assessor. It follows you.

The real risks of going cheap

Picking a training provider on price alone can cost you a lot more than the difference in course fees.

Your ticket can get challenged later. If your assessor gets flagged, regulators can go back and review every licence that assessor signed off, including yours.
You might not actually be job-ready. A rushed assessment can wave through a driver who is not truly ready to handle a B-double or road train in real traffic, on a real road, at the end of a long shift.
Employers check now. More freight and logistics companies are looking into training history before they put a driver in one of their trucks, and a flagged assessor on your record is not a good look.
Insurance gets messy. If your licence is later found to be invalid and you are in a crash, your cover and your competency both get questioned at the worst possible time.
Everyone else on the road wears the risk too. A driver who was never properly assessed behind the wheel of a loaded heavy vehicle is a danger to every other person on that road, not just themselves.

What a good provider looks like

You do not need to be a compliance expert to spot the difference between a solid provider and a risky one.

Registration and accreditation. A real provider is registered with the state authority, and where it applies, the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator, and can show you proof straight away.
Assessor track record. Ask how long their assessors have held accreditation and whether any have ever been pulled up or flagged.
A proper assessment process. Final assessments should be documented properly, often on video, and should follow a set process, not a rushed tick and flick.
Honest pricing. If the price looks way cheaper than everyone else in the market, something in the process has probably been cut to get there.
Reviews that talk about the actual test. Skip the star rating and read what past students say about how thorough the on-road assessment really was.

What to check before you sign up

A few minutes of checking before you pay a deposit can save you months of grief later.

Ask the provider for their registration details and check them yourself with the state transport authority, most publish an accredited RTO and assessor lookup. Ask how long their assessors have been accredited and whether any have ever had their accreditation reviewed or pulled.

If a provider dodges these questions or cannot give you a straight answer, that tells you everything you need to know.
