TDT was a great first impression, everyone's amazing and super helpful. Personally i had Scott as my trainer and assessor when completing my Heavy Rigid truck licence.  He was absolutely amazing, super friendly and talkative which helped with nerves as well as being super clear and simple with all of his instructions. Which ultimately made it super easy to drive without stressing about anything. Scott is really polite but really straight to the point, which I think is great. Thank you Scott and thank you tdt😃

A huge thank you to David for helping me successfully get my HR licence! I was extremely nervous before my driving test, but David was incredibly patient, supportive and positive throughout the whole training session. He explained everything clearly and gave me plenty of opportunities to practise until I felt comfortable and confident. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):

• RPL facilitates the progression of candidates through Qualifications by giving advanced standing for learning outcomes they already have achieved or competency they can demonstrate as already being held.
• RPL is appropriate for candidates who have previously attained skills and knowledge and who, when enrolling in Qualifications, seek to shorten the normal duration of their training and either continue or commence working.
• RPL is offered to all candidates during the Pre-Enrolment process.

A Dangerous Goods Licence will benefit anyone working in a company or industry in which their role requires them to pack, store, handle and transport dangerous goods. The licence ensures that dangerous goods are properly handled so it does not pose a risk to your business, employees and the public. 

What should you bring to the course?

You should bring a notepad and computer device to participate in the blended learning course.

Overview

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to obtain a dangerous goods (DG) driver licence to transport DG by road.

The unit covers compliance with regulatory requirements but does not address all the skills and knowledge for the transportation of DG. On achieving this unit and obtaining a licence, further industry specific training will be required to satisfy legislative requirements to transport DG.

The primary legislative requirement applicable to this unit of competency is the Model Subordinate Law on the Transport of Dangerous Goods by Road or Rail, which is reflected in state/territory legislation.

This law, in relation to the safe transport of DG, references the current version of the Australian Dangerous Goods (ADG) Code, the Model Act on the Transport of Dangerous Goods by Road and Rail, relevant Australian Standards (AS) and relevant work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) legislation including licensing and assessment requirements.

Achieving this unit of competency is a necessary requirement for obtaining a licence. However, it is only one of several criteria for obtaining a DG driver licence. More information can be sourced from the regulator in each jurisdiction regarding other criteria that apply, which can vary between states and territories. Compliance with these requirements may be required nationally and/or in specific jurisdictions.

Program Objectives

This Dangerous Goods course is designed to provide the necessary training and assessment that is required by statutory authorities to allow drivers to apply for or renew their bulk transportation of dangerous goods licence.

Duration

2 day course.

• Hazards associated with dangerous goods and responsibilities when transporting them
• Identify and recognise dangerous properties of placarded loads
• Emergency procedures
• Identifying correct fire-fighting extinguishers and PPE requirements
• Australian Dangerous Goods Code by Road and Rail (ADG-7.9)
• Prescribed quantities of dangerous goods and requirements for vehicles to be placarded
• Segregation of dangerous goods

Eligibility Requirements

• You must hold a FULL driver’s licence and not be on any “P” plates at the time of enrolment (WorkSafe requirement)

Entry requirements

• A written enrolment form.
• Unique Student Identifier (USI)- every student must have a verified USI without which unit of competency will not be issued.
• LLND test prior to enrolment. Applicant must demonstrate the language, literacy and numeracy required at least AQF level 2.
• A Pre-Training Review prior to enrolment to determine the support needs of individual learners and provides access to the educational and support services necessary for the individual learner to meet the requirements of the training product.
• Photo ID must be brought on the day of enrolment that includes full name, signature and date of birth & a secondary ID.

(The LLND assessment is utilised to assess if a student has the ability to complete the training at the required level of competency and for TDT to assess the level of support required in this regard in order to provide the student with a reasonable opportunity to complete the unit of competency. The LLND assessment usually takes place during the pre-training review, where support needs are assessed and plans are put into place to achieve the best outcome for the student)

This dangerous goods licence training prepares you to work in your job roles such as:

• Identifying dangerous goods by class and division
• Identify and recognise dangerous properties of placarded loads
• Transfer of dangerous goods
• Transporting of dangerous goods
• Australian Dangerous Goods Code by Road and Rail (ADG-7.3)
• Dangerous goods documentation

WorkSafe Registration & Additional Requirements

Upon successful completion of your course, you will need to visit the WorkSafe Victoria website to:

• Prepare for licence application or renewal.
• Create a WorkSafe account and Register.
• Review the DG licence process from Worksafe
• Obtain a VicRoads driver history report.

• Demonstrate medical fitness – you will need to pass a medical examination to transport dangerous goods (Access Driver Commercial Health Assessment document here)
• WorkSafe Licence Fee: $94.25 (Payable online upon successful course completion).
  ⚠ Important: The WorkSafe licence fee and the above WorkSafe requirements must be paid within 60 days of course completion, or your Notice of Assessment will become invalid.

Please note:

• Non-compliance with course terms and conditions may result in cancellation of enrolment.
• If unsuccessful, additional training & retesting may be required (fees apply).

Note: Depending on the State / Territory this may not be limited to:

• Relevant and valid driver’s licence (in your state or territory)
• Suitable driver traffic history
• The Certificates of Competency issued from this course are only recognised by the competent authority for a period of six (6) months from the date of issue by the RTO for the purposes of issuing a licence.
• In order to apply for a Dangerous Goods Driver Licence, you also need a Driver Commercial Health Assessment – Medical Certificatecompleted by a qualified medical practitioner stating that you’re medically fit to drive a dangerous goods vehicle and dated not more than 6 months prior to your application being made, your trainer will talk about it during the course.
• You must hold a dangerous goods driver’s licence in Victoria to drive a licensed vehicle carrying dangerous goods. Dangerous goods include materials such as: flammable liquids (petrol, kerosene, turpentine, flammable paints etc.), corrosives (hydrochloric acid), flammable gases (LP Gas), and non-flammable non-toxic gases (CO2).

Student Support

All students are provided with a range of learning support options and resources to help them achieve competency. This includes:

• Support from appropriately qualified trainers including through phone and email contact details.
• Reasonable adjustments to assessment materials as required based on individual learning needs.
• Referral to external support services such as the Reading Writing Hotline.
• You may not have studied for a while, may have English as a second language or need additional assistance with literacy or numeracy. We will identify any additional support needs you may have at the time of application and enrolment and may prepare a Student Support Plan for you based on those needs.
• TDT Training Australia aims to provide quality training and assessment services that comply with 2025 Standards for RTOs and will issue an AQF Statement of Attainment once you are deemed competent in this unit of competency.

Resource requirements

Please remember to bring the following with you on the training day:

• Bring a pen and paper for notetaking.
• Appropriate clothing & footwear to meet Industry & OH&S regulations (e.g. enclosed shoes).
• Two forms of identification – Driver’s licence and a Medicare/EFTPOS/Passport.
• Unique Student Identifier (USI) – If you do not have one (or cannot remember it), you can apply or check for one at usi.gov.au.
