Heavy Combination Vehicle:

A Heavy Combination vehicle is:

a) A prime move to which is attached a single semi-trailer that has a GVM more than 9 tonnes plus any unladen converter dolly; or

b) A rigid motor vehicle to which is attached a trailer that has a GVM more than 9 tonnes plus any unladen converter dolly.

Heavy Combination (HC) Truck Licence Course in Victoria

Objectives

This course is designed to train drivers to a competent standard, which will enable them to pass the relevant VicRoads testing criteria, skills and practical driving in the category of Heavy combination.

Duration

TDT offers a course duration of 8, 12 or 16 hours (depending on experience). Hourly training is also available upon request.

Special Conditions

Course duration/costs do not guarantee students will sit the on road licence test. To be eligible to test, students MUST first meet VicRoads criteria. If criteria are NOT met students will not be able to undergo the on road test and will continue to train for the duration of the course. Additional costs will apply if students book subsequent training and/or testing.

Heavy Combination (HC) Licence FAQs

A Heavy Combination (HC) vehicle is a prime mover towing a single semi-trailer or a rigid truck towing a trailer with a GVM over 9 tonnes.

A Victorian HC licence allows you to drive heavy combination vehicles like semi-trailers or heavy rigid trucks with large trailers attached. 

You must: 

  • Hold a current car licence for at least 24 months (2 years) 
  • Have held a Medium Rigid (MR) or Heavy Rigid (HR) licence for at least 12 months 
  • Pass a medical test if required 
  • Complete a practical and theory assessment

HC licence holders are qualified for roles including linehaul driver, livestock transport operator, tanker driver, and container freight driver. 

Yes, you can upgrade to a Multi Combination (MC) licence after holding a HC licence for at least 12 months, along with successful completion of further training and assessment.
